"Addressing Industry Issues via Reformulation "

Following Dr. Hoyle's presentation, Mr. Hecker outlines multiple objectives that must be achieved in changing coatings specifications.
Andrew Hecker joined the Valspar Corporation in early 2006 as Vice President for the Automotive Refinish business. On November 1, 2007 he was named Vice President - Packaging, North America and was elected an Officer of the Corporation. In addition to his work at Valspar, Andrew is active in industry goups addressing potential regulatory changes in our industry (NAMPA, CMI, GMA and others).
Prior to joining Valspar, Andrew spent 13 years with automotive parts supplier, ArvinMeritor, where he progressed through a series of plant management and general management roles in the U.S., France and the United Kingdom. He is fluent in French and English.
Andrew holds a Bachelor’s degree in economics and philosophy from Wabash College and an MBA from Harvard University.
Andrew and his wife Kerrie, and their three sons live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

In 2006, he started specializing in instrumentation; ink cost control; film application; and other special projects in INX’s Metal Division. Carl is also responsible for presenting INX’s series of 2-piece educational seminars, which has provided him the opportunity to visit a number of can plants throughout North America. He lives in Sussex, WI with his wife; twin daughters; dog; and an impressive collection of Green Bay Packer memorabilia.

Mike’s 22 years of experience began in 1986 with the VALSPAR Corporation after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Chemistry. His career started in the rigid packaging group as an Associate Chemist formulating interior can coatings for sheet and coil applications. Late in 1989 he joined the WATSON STANDARD Company as a formulating chemist for exterior can coatings for rigid packaging emphasizing thermal and Ultra-Violet cure chemistries. He currently is the Director of Product Development and formulates Ultra-Violet, water-based, and thermal cure coatings for rigid and flexible substrates for interior and exterior applications.
Alex Folloso, Metal Decorating R&D Manager, INX International
Alex graduated from of University of Illinois Chicago in 1997 with a Bachelors in Chemistry. Alex joined INX International Ink Company in March 1998 working as a Research Chemist. He has spent the majority of his 12 years in the Metal Decorating Division of INX and is currently in charge of research and development for the INX metal decorating division.

Dave Randall has been a Senior Sales Consultant with CTI for 9 years making him one of its first employees. His experience with thermochromic, photochromic, glow in the dark, and color-shifting inks ranges from metal decorating, to offset, flexo, gravure and silkscreen printing. Dave has extensive experience supporting metal deco production runs and can trials and has been very active in helping to develop and support the thermochromic metal deco technology to where it is today. Lately many of his efforts have been directed toward a number of new opportunities in Latin America.

- Started in the open hearth department of Weirton Steel in mid-1960’s and spent 17 years at Weirton and National Steel, mostly in research & development.
- Time at National Steel R&D mostly spent in organic coatings (3-years) and metallography where there was a focus on product development and failure analysis.
- Was metallography lab supervisor when research center was shut down.
- With National Steel’s new Japanese partner, and with the mill in Weirton being spun-off as an ESOP, the research department was scheduled to move next to Great Lakes Steel in Michigan. At that time I elected to join Central States Can Company in Massillon, Ohio

Brad Pearson is the Global Marketing Manager for the packaging coatings segment of Dow Coating Materials. He is based in Midland, Michigan.
Brad joined The Dow Chemical Company in 1997 as a chemical engineer for the Dow Automotive business. Throughout his career at Dow, Brad has held a variety of roles in research, product management and marketing. In 2008, Brad was named to his current role in the coatings business, where he manages the global strategy and market opportunities for the coatings packaging business.
Brad earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Michigan State University, and an MBA from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Jim Peterson is the Vice President of Corporate Relations for Ball Corporation. In this role, his responsibilities include driving Ball’s global sustainability efforts both internally at Ball’s 60+ manufacturing plants as well as interfacing with external stakeholders like customers, suppliers, trade associations and various local and federal governments. Jim is currently a member
of the Can Manufacturing Institute Executive Board, North American Metal Packaging Association Executive Board and is a former a member of both the CSPA Aerosol and CAPCO Executive Boards. Married with two children, Jim works out of Ball’s Corporate office located outside Denver, Colorado.

In February 2005, Jack Miller, a veteran of more than thirty years in paper and packaging founded Market-Intell, a market intelligence consultancy. In September, 2005, Jack joined Pira International, a leading provider of consulting and information services to the paper, print and packaging industries and their supply chains. At that time, Jack merged the activities of Market-Intell into Pira.
In May, 2009 Jack separated from Pira and is once again consulting as Market-Intell.
While at Pira, Jack conducted market research and consultancy in paper, print, packaging, including the PRIMIR study, Sustainable Print in a Dynamic Global Market: What Going Green Means.
Jack is the former Director of Market Intelligence with Domtar, a $6 billion paper company. At Domtar, he also held positions as Regional Sales Manager, Territory Manager, and Product Line Manager. Prior to joining Domtar, Jack held numerous positions in marketing and new product development at Continental Can Company.
Jack has written for the PaperTree Letter, Canadian Printer, Printing Impressions and Package Printing. He has presented on sustainability at SustainComm World at Cal Poly and at IntertechPira conferences Biodegradable Plastics in Packaging Applications and Sustainability in Packaging.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from The College of the Holy Cross and has done graduate studies in Statistics and Finance.

Kevin last spoke to us on digital printing in packaging during our 2003 convention; he return this year to update us on what has developed during the past six years.

Kevin Karstedt is president of Karstedt Associates, Ltd. Since 1996 his firm has been on the forefront of digital technologies that affect the production and execution of package printing. He works with brand owners, package printers and converters, and companies who develop tools for use in the package development and printing industries including digital workflow technologies and digital printing. For the past decade Karstedt Associates has written numerous industry research reports and helped companies develop actionable development and marketing plans targeting the packaging and package printing supply chain. Kevin has been involved with digital packaging graphics production and digital printing since the mid 1980s and is considered both a pioneer and a visionary with regards to digital printing and digital workflows. His client and contact list is a who’s who of all things digital. Kevin and his wife Lucinda live in western New York State where strong weather makes strong families and strong relationships.

Kenneth Matyska is a Senior Technical Representative for INX Intl. Ink Co. He has held a variety of positions during his 39-year career in the metal decorating industry. Ken is past President of the International Metal Decorators Association and currently is on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors. Ken is also a member of the Editorial Board for the Canmaker magazine.
